NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Women on Monday strongly condemned the online abuse directed at the family of foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, especially his daughter, and said that sharing her number online is a "gravely irresponsible act."Vikram Misri is currently facing social media trolls after he announced India and Pakistan's ceasefire. The trollers also shared Misri's number in the online space. Several civil service associations and political leaders came in his support. The NCW, in a statement, said, "The National Commission for Women strongly condemns the deplorable online abuse directed at the family of India’s Foreign Secretary, Mr. Vikram Misri, especially his daughter. Sharing the personal contact details of the Foreign Secretary’s daughter is a gravely irresponsible act. It is a serious breach of privacy and poses a threat to her safety."
The commission also said that such personal attacks on the family members of Misri are morally indefensible. "We urge everyone to act with decency, dignity, and restraint. Let us rise above this!" NCW said. Earlier, the IAS Association also demonstrated support for Misri and his family via social media, denouncing unjustified personal assaults on civil servants who discharge their duties with honesty."The IAS Association stands in solidarity with Shri Vikram Misri, Foreign Secretary, & his family. Unwarranted personal attacks on civil servants performing their duties with integrity are deeply regrettable. We reaffirm our commitment to uphold the dignity of public service," IAS association said in a post on X.
Both the IRTS Association and IRS (C&IT) Association criticised the harassment aimed at Misri and his family, stressing the importance of maintaining dignity."The IRTS Association strongly condemns unwarranted abuse and personal attacks against Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri and his family. We urge everyone to maintain respect and decorum, acknowledging his dedicated service and significant contributions towards the nation," it said in a post on X."IRS (C&IT) Association strongly condemns the reprehensible personal attacks against Foreign Secretary Sh. Vikram Misri & his family. We stand in complete solidarity with them amid unwarranted personal criticism. We reaffirm our firm resolve to upholding dignity of public service," IRS said in a post.Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav supported Misri, noting that such attacks affect the confidence of committed officers. He also highlighted the BJP government's inaction and their inability to safeguard the officer's respect."It is the government's responsibility to make decisions - not individual officers. Some anti-social criminal elements are openly crossing all limits of abusive language against the officer and his family, but neither the BJP government nor any of its ministers are coming forward to protect his honour and respect or discussing possible action against those who make such unwanted posts," Akhilesh wrote on X.The situation emerged after India and Pakistan reached an agreement to cease military operations across land, air, and sea, after four days of cross-border drone and missile attacks that had brought the countries near to war. Misri announced that the director generals of military operations from both nations had confirmed this during a conversation, with subsequent discussions planned for May 12.
