He said the Ayushman Bharat and Vay Vandana Yojana schemes are ensuring free healthcare for the poor and elderly. “Varanasi has issued nearly 50,000 Vay Vandana cards—the highest in the country. This is not just a number, it’s a symbol of our service commitment,” he said, adding that lakhs of families in UP have saved crores of rupees due to free treatments.

Praising the role of Banas Dairy in transforming rural livelihoods, PM Modi said the dairy has “reshaped lives and destinies” of thousands of families. “It has rewarded hard work and given wings to aspirations. Many women in Purvanchal have become Lakhpati Didis through this initiative,” he said. The dairy collects milk from nearly one lakh farmers in the region and has started distributing Gir cows and animal feed in Banaras, he added.

Yogi Adityanath highlighted that Kashi and surrounding districts have received the highest number of Geographical Indication (GI) tags in the country. “Uttar Pradesh is now No. 1 in India in GI tag recognition, thanks to the Prime Minister’s efforts to uplift local artisans and give their products global recognition,” he said. He added that 21 new GI tag certificates would be handed over today, aimed at preserving and promoting the identity of indigenous crafts and boosting local economy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a comprehensive update about the alleged gang-rape of a young woman in his constituency upon his arrival in Varanasi on Friday morning. Speaking at the Varanasi event, CM Yogi Adityanath highlighted BJP’s momentum by referencing recent electoral wins. “After the victories in Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi, and the successful organisation of Maha Kumbh, the Prime Minister has arrived in Kashi today,” he said, calling it a moment of pride for the city and the state.

PM Modi will unveil power projects worth over Rs 1,800 crore, including new substations across Jaunpur, Chandauli and Ghazipur. He will also inaugurate police barracks, transit hostels, and rural amenities such as libraries, anganwadi centres, and school buildings.

The tunnel project comes as part of the broader Rs 2,870 crore airport expansion plan cleared by Modi 3.0 in June 2024. PM Modi had laid the foundation for the project’s first phase, including the new terminal, in October 2024.

The LBSI airport is set to undergo a massive expansion, increasing its terminal area from 24,500 sq m to 99,500 sq m. Runway length will extend to 4,075 metres, increasing annual handling capacity from 39 lakh to 1 crore passengers.

To facilitate smooth traffic on NH-31 after the runway’s expansion, the underpass tunnel is being built by NHAI at a cost of Rs 652.54 crore. It will allow uninterrupted movement between Varanasi and Lucknow, even as air operations expand.

Immediately after landing in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed by the Police commissioner, Divisional commissioner, and District magistrate on the recent rape incident in the city. The PM directed officials to take the strictest possible action against the accused and asked them to put in place strong preventive measures to ensure such crimes do not recur.

At least 50 people lost their lives in UP, Bihar and Uttarakhand on Thursday following a deadly spell of severe weather marked by intense thunderstorm, lightning and heavy rains. While 27 people died in Bihar, UP saw 22 fatalities across 11 districts, including 13 resulting from lightning strikes. In Uttarakhand, a 40-year-old man farmer died after being struck by lightning in Sunkhari Kalan village of Udham Singh Nagar district. In Bihar, Nalanda district alone accounted for 20 deaths, while two persons died in Siwan and one each in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur and Jehanabad districts. The state has reported at least 40 deaths due to inclement weather over the past two days, with lightning strike claiming 13 lives across four districts on Wednesday.

Chief Ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have announced ex gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for families of those killed in Thursday’s storm. CM Nitish Kumar and CM Yogi Adityanath also directed officials to expedite rescue, assess crop and livestock damage, and provide aid to affected farmers. In UP, rain was recorded in 36 districts. Meanwhile, power infrastructure in Bihar was severely hit, with 320 electricity poles uprooted during the storm. Relief and damage assessment efforts are underway across the affected states.

A brief but intense spell of rain and gusty winds offered relief from the scorching heat in Delhi on Thursday evening. Winds gusting up to 50 kmph brought down temperatures by 6–10°C across several areas. Mayur Vihar saw temperatures plummet from 37°C to 27°C in an hour, while Lodhi Road saw a 6°C drop post-thunderstorm, said IMD scientist Krishna Kumar Mishra. However, Safdarjung, the city’s base station, did not register any rainfall. Mayur Vihar recorded 5mm of rain and Pitampura saw 1mm.

Delhi recorded its second straight ‘warm night’ on Thursday, with the minimum temperature at Safdarjung touching 25.9°C — six degrees above normal and the highest in April in three years. While Safdarjung didn’t register a heatwave, parts of the city such as Ayanagar (40.2°C) and Ridge (40.9°C) remained under heatwave conditions. A ‘warm night’ is declared when daytime temperatures cross 40°C and night temperatures are at least 4.5 degrees above normal. IMD warned that warm nights were observed across most parts of Delhi.
