Panaji: After a prolonged period of soaring prices, the cost of eggs in Goa has finally seen a modest decline, offering some relief to consumers. The price of eggs dropped by Rs 5 this month, falling from Rs 80 per dozen in April to Rs 75 in May.
Over the past six months, consumers grappled with fluctuating egg prices, which rose sharply from Rs 50 per dozen in mid-2024 to Rs 70 per dozen in Oct-Nov, peaking at Rs 90 per dozen in Dec. This was largely attributed to the Christmas season demand. The price dropped to Rs 80 per dozen in the following months but stayed there without much change, until now.
“It is a welcome change that the prices are slowly falling,” said A Bepari, a local egg vendor. He said that one of the primary reasons for the earlier price surge was the escalating cost of poultry feed — mainly corn and soya — which pushed up production costs for poultry farmers.
While feed costs have been a persistent issue, vendors and poultry farmers also point to weather woes. “The hot weather increases thirst and reduces appetite among poultry birds,” said a local poultry farmer. “As a result, they consume more water and less feed, which affects their ability to produce eggs.”
The recent dip offers a glimmer of hope, but vendors are cautious. Feed prices are still high, and the weather continues to be unpredictable. “We can expect prices to fall further once the monsoon is in full swing by June-July,” another vendor said.
