VARANASI: What are the odds of an untoward incident if a wedding guest is denied his favourite paneer dish in the desired quantity? Well, quite a lot if the man drives a minibus and goes by the alias of ‘Bamboo'!
Angered by the refusal of the hosts to serve him as much paneer as he wanted, the minibus driver, named Dharmendra Yadav alias Bamboo, who had ferried the baratis to the wedding venue in Hamidpur village in Chandauli district, drove his vehicle into the venue late on Saturday.
Six people, including the groom's father and the bride's uncle, suffered serious injuries in this incident, while the driver managed to escape with his vehicle. The wedding had to be halted at night following the incident and was solemnised with the intervention of local senior residents and police early on Sunday.
Mughalsarai inspector Gagan Raj Singh said the injured were rushed to the trauma centre of BHU. Teams have been engaged to arrest the driver, he said. During investigation, it was revealed that on Saturday evening, a wedding procession had arrived from Pahadi village in Varanasi's Manduadih for the marriage of Rajnath Yadav's daughter in Hamidpur.
During the event, the minibus driver also joined the feast and demanded more paneer. Perhaps a bit more than just more, according to the complainant. However, the caterers refused to oblige him, leading to a dispute. According to eyewitnesses, when it led to a commotion, the bride's father arrived there and hit the driver on the head with a ladle.
An enraged ‘Bamboo' left the venue only to return a few minutes later in his vehicle at full throttle and drive straight into the mandap.
On the complaint from the bride's father, police lodged an FIR against Dharmendra Yadav alias Bamboo under BNS sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 281 (endangering human life by rash driving), 125(a) and 125(b). While the groom's father, Vinod Yadav, suffered serious head injuries, bride's uncle Jogi Yadav's hand was crushed. Apart from them, four other guests – Bullu Yadav, Ravi, Doodhnath and Babulal Patel – also suffered injuries.
