BMC says no immediate water crisis in Mumbai, urges citizens to use water wisely

Mumbai's municipal administration has reassured citizens that there are currently no plans to impose water cuts, as water stocks are sufficient until July 31, 2025. The reservoirs have a combined stock of 22.66%, and the government has approved additional water release from contingency reserves. While the situation is under control, citizens are urged to use water sparingly.

MUMBAI: The municipal administration on Monday assured citizens that there are no plans to impose water cuts in Mumbai currently and that there is sufficient water stocks available in the lakes upto July 31, 2025.
As of Monday morning, the reservoirs that supply water to Mumbai had a combined stock of 22.66%. The Maharashtra government has also approved the release of additional water for Mumbai from the contingency reserves of the Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna dams.

“The situation is under control. We have planned adequately to ensure uninterrupted water supply till July 31,” a statement from the civic body said. It added that any further decision on water cuts would be based on rainfall forecasts in coordination with the India Meteorological Department.

The BMC said it is keeping a close watch on water availability and is prepared to make adjustments if necessary. However, officials urged citizens to use water sparingly and avoid wastage.
“Though there is no immediate need for water cuts, we appeal to Mumbaikars to cooperate and use water judiciously,” the BMC said.
