MUMBAI:
Mumbai University (MU) has recalled the convocation certificates with its misspelled name in the logo issued to affiliated colleges for the graduating batch of 2023-24 and said they would be replaced as soon as possible.
MU, in the circular on Tuesday, admitted that its name on the logo was misspelled as 'University of Mumabai' and the administration has decided to reprint all degree certificates.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Varun Sardesai submitted a letter to minister of higher education Chandrakant Patil, asking for an inquiry into the misprint in the certificates.
A city college principal said they found out about the error only two days ago and could not reschedule their degree distribution event. Now, they have to plan a re-distribution.
Students asked to return the certificates MU conducted its convocation ceremony on Jan 7, and the certificates were later distributed to colleges who conducted their own degree distribution ceremonies as per their schedule and availability of their guests.
Some have already conducted their independent ceremonies and distributed the certificates with the erroneous logo to students and are now recalling them, while others will hold the functions this week. An MU spokesperson said the university will send the revised certificates to colleges where ceremonies are scheduled in the next few days.
One college, where the ceremony was held last month, has asked its students to check their certificates for all kinds of misprints, including their personal details, university’s name, and the logo. The college even placed the ‘erroneous’ logo’s image on the circular asking them to return the certificates if any errors were found.
While MU’s spokesperson said the university took immediate action about 15 days ago, after the misprint was brought to their notice, not a single college that TOI has spoken to confirmed about receiving any directive till Tuesday. Most of the principals said they noticed the error only a few days ago.
MU senate member Pradeep Sawant said the administration should reprint the certificates and send them to all colleges instead of waiting for them to return the erroneous ones. Some of the colleges have already distributed the certificates a month ago and getting them back from over 1,000 students could be difficult, he added.
